Our Hope of Healing
“Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, ‘If you return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreth's from among you, and prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.’” 1 Samuel 7:3
What is meant by foreign gods? Let me suggest - our hurts, hang-ups and habits that can turn into them. Everything we put before God is a foreign god or an idol of worship in our lives. Sometimes we feel we have the right to hang onto unforgiveness and hurts; and in doing so we allow our lives to be consumed by the hurts instead of being consumed by God.
We let the voices of our past hang up trip us up on our road through life, instead of taking the road less traveled. Psalms 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
In the cases of many today, hurts, hang-ups and habits have taken the place of the false gods. The Israelites thought their false gods were the answer to their problems but they continued to find themselves defeated, exiled and in horrible slavery.
Does that sound like any of us? Defeated by our past, shunned from family and friends, and trapped in a continual cycle of slavery to our past?
We all come to God broken because we’ve let the things of our past dictate our yesterdays, rule our todays, and predict our tomorrows. How long will you continue to serve the false gods in your life? It's times to let the One true God to step in and heal you and change your life.
We need to come to terms with our continual defeats by turning in the direction of the One who can truly deliver us from our enemy. But just like the Israelites, we must act. We must turn from our brokenness towards the holiness of God and let Him do the greatest work in the deepest places in our lives!
Are you ready to be healed and set free? How do we know that turning to God will deliver us from our enemy? Take a look at verse 12, “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the LORD has helped us.’” I’ve come to the conviction that Jesus Christ is the only help to my healing! How about you? Do you have the same conviction?
God bless you,
