Spiritual Dementia
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us.” Romans 8:37
In 1978, Russian novelist Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn brought a sobering word regarding the evils of Communism when he said, “If I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible what was the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 70 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than the fact – men have forgotten God.”
Those four words, men have forgotten God, are sobering when I think of our own country right now. Some 70 years after the collapse of communism around the world, America is now in full spiritual rebellion from moral, spiritual, and social truth because America has forgotten God!
Back in 1970, Francis Schaeffer said that America was already post-Christian. And he predicted that historic Christianity would soon become the minority in the West, and that Christianity would be stripped of its cultural power and influence. And now, we see his words are ringing true.
What America need right now, before it’s too late is a Christian revolution that looks and feels like a revival for the souls that are spiritually dead and renewal for the church that is spiritually depressed! Even Francis Schaeffer, the great Christian thinker, might find it painful to see how far America has fallen morally in the last 25 years.
When 13-year-old girls are encouraged by doctors to have their healthy breasts removed, because they are temporarily confused about their gender identity – we need revival! When boys bathrooms in schools have tampons, since politicians (not scientist) are now telling us that men can menstruate too – we need revival! When you and I can be banned from social media, and even sued, for misgendering someone – we need revival! When millions of music videos saturate the airwaves with the most vile, graphic, and degrading sexual imagery – we need revival! When fentanyl overdoses have become the leading cause of death for adults between 18 and 45 – we need revival! When a pastor who made a reference to homosexual practice in a sermon is disinvited from praying at a presidential inauguration while a homosexual bishop was invited instead – we need revival! When the Los Angeles Dodgers publicly honor a anti-Catholic, Jesus-mocking drag queen group called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – we need revival! When we now have more self-proclaimed millennial witches than Bible-believing Presbyterians – we need revival!
A few years ago, Cardinal Francis George said, “I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison, and his successor will die a martyr in the public square. His successor will pick up the charred remains of a ruined society and slowly help rebuild it, as the church has done so often in human history.”
Those are powerful words! They remind us that the church does its best work when hatred for God’s truth abounds, when the rising tide of evil overflows throughout the culture, when rejection and persecution are prevailing, and when the culture’s collapse has been realized by most! Oh yes, there’s still time to right the ship of our society and carve a new course for our culture.
So church, let’s keep charging forward as God’s mighty fighting force standing up for our Savior, and let's never be ashamed of the gospel of Christ. It’s not too late to remind as many people as possible that God loves them, He really does!
God bless you!
